The Texas State Board of Dental Examiners (TSBDE) has jurisdiction over licensed dentists, dental hygienist, registered dental assistants, and dental laboratories in the State of Texas. It establishes standards for the practice of dentistry in Texas and enforces the Dental Practice Act and other statutes relating to the practice of dentistry.

- Successfully completed a current course in basic life support.
- Completed a minimum of 8 hours of didactic education and testing in monitoring the administration of nitrous oxide taken through a CODA-accredited dental, dental hygiene, or dental assisting program, approved by the board.
22 Tex. Admin. Code §114.4(d). Dental assistants who have previously obtained a nitrous oxide monitoring registration may continue to practice and renew their registration. However, nitrous oxide monitoring registrations that have been expired for more than a year may not be renewed unless the applicant complies with the new statutory mandates above. 22 Tex. Admin. Code §114.4(a)(2).
Texas Dental Board Considers Clarification of Rules
Recently the Dental Board requested stakeholder input on the reduction or termination of nitrous oxide administered by dental hygienists and dental assistants who hold appropriate Nitrous Oxide Monitoring authorization may terminate the administration of Nitrous Oxide Sedation or reduce the administered concentration of Nitrous Oxide Sedation. Informal stakeholder input closed on August 22, 2019.
