Anyone who performs electrical work in the state of Texas, and is not specifically exempt by law, must be licensed. Electrical work is defined as “[a]ny labor or material used in installing, maintaining or extending an electrical wiring system and the appurtenances, apparatus or equipment used in connection with the use of electrical energy in, on, outside, or attached to a building, residence structure, property, or premises; service entrance conductors, as defined by the National Electrical Code.”
Electrician licensing and safety in Texas is administered by the Texas Department of Licensing and Registration (TDRL). The TDRL is responsible for issuing the various types of business and individual electrician licenses, overseeing the standards of licensure, and investigating and resolving complaints received against its licensees.
The types of electrician licenses in Texas include:
- Individual Electrician Licenses:
- Master Electrician
- Master Sign Electrician
- Journeyman Electrician
- Journeyman Sign Electrician
- Journeyman Lineman
- Journeyman Industrial Electrician (available as of September 1, 2018)
- Residential Wireman
- Maintenance Electrician
- Residential Appliance Installer
- Electrical Apprentice
- Electrical Sign Apprentice
- Business Electrician Licenses:
- Electrical Contractor
- Electrical Sign Contractor
- Residential Appliance Installation Contractor
The requirements for obtaining an Electrician License in Texas vary based on the different types of licenses. All applicants must submit an application, submit any required supporting documentation, and pay the fees for each type of license for which you apply. Additionally, each license has its own specific requirements on experience, education, and/or examination.
There are minimum liability insurance coverage requirements for business electrical licenses for Electrical Contractors, Electrical Sign Contractors, and Residential Appliance Installation Contractors. The business license holder must also carry insurance that meets the statutory requirements for workers’ compensation coverage.
To qualify to sit for the Texas Electrician Examination, you must first file an application with TDRL. After your application and supporting documents are received, TDRL will evaluate it and so long as you meet all the qualification you will be eligible to sit for the exam. You will then be mailed a postcard that will instruct you on how to schedule the exam.
Customers, colleagues, and anyone from the general public may file a complaint with TDLR against an electrician licensed in Texas. The TDLR investigates all complaints filed against the professionals it licenses and has a comprehensive enforcement program with the power to impose penalties and sanctions.
