Texas strictly regulates the prescribing of controlled substances. As of September 1, 2018 the official prescription forms for controlled substances are re-designed and have additional security features. For the next few months Texas practitioners may continue to use the previous prescriptions pads. Effective June 1, 2019 prescription pads ordered prior to the redesign will no longer be valid.
If you are a Texas practitioner who prescribes controlled substances, make sure that you order new prescription pads well in advance of June 1st.
Ordering Controlled Substance Prescription Pads
There has been an increase in the number of prescription pad orders since September 1st of last year. The Texas State Board of Pharmacy reports that the processing time for pad orders may exceed 45 days.
After the Board completes all necessary validations, the prescription pad print vendor may take up to 30 days to ship the official prescription forms. If you prescribe controlled substances, it is critical that you order the new forms well in advance of June 1st to ensure there is no lapse in your ability to prescribe your patients the medication they need.
If you have multiple office locations, it is necessary for you to have a separate prescription pad for each office location. 21 CFR § 1301.12. The official prescription forms are not transferable. Prescriptions written for Schedule II controlled substances must be filled within 21 days of the date the prescription was issues.
