Understand how DSHS investigates an emergency medical service professional complaint
DSHS refers complaints about emergency medical service professionals to the EMS Compliance Group for preliminary investigation. The preliminary investigation confirms DSHS jurisdictional authority over the complaint. Common complaints under DSHS EMS Compliance Group jurisdiction include violations of care or protocol, report or documentation of patient care violations, expired licensure or certification violations, or allegations of drug diversion or criminal conduct. Other unprofessional conduct that poses a danger to the public may be cause for disciplinary action.
Matters falling within DSHS jurisdiction will have a formal investigation opened with the DSHS Enforcement Review Committee to determine the validity of the allegations. When allegations are found to be valid, the Committee will determine the disciplinary action warranted. The Committee might determine a case should be dismissed. In some circumstance, a licensee can complete a remediation plan with no formal disciplinary action. The Committee has the authority to assess a fine (EMS Provider only) or suspend or revoke certifications and licenses.
